Everything you need to know about the 2020 Met Gala

Your comprehensive guide.

The biggest red carpet event on the fashion calendar, the Met Gala—or, the Oscars of fashion as it is also affectionately known—is once again returning to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on the first Monday of May, 2020. The fundraising gala draws the highest profile names from the fashion and celebrity worlds, who step onto the red carpet at the gala in show-stopping sartorial creations that blur the lines between fashion and fantasy in the most memorable way.

From the theme, to the date, to the co-chairs, here’s everything we know about the 2020 Met Gala so far.

What is the Met Gala?

The first Met Gala was held in 1948 to raise funds for the museum’s Costume Institute and as a way to mark the opening of its main exhibition. Since 1995, the so-called Oscars of fashion has been presided over by Anna Wintour, US Vogue’s editor-in-chief. It is a celebration of all things fashion, and is considered one of the most highly-coveted invitations of the year. High profile celebrities, models and fashion industry icons attend the annual fundraising event wearing the most incredible looks that are in line with that year’s Costume Institute exhibition theme and corresponding gala theme.

And, since its inception, the Met Gala has continued to be a major fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute—consistently raising funds that surpass eight-figures—and each year, marking the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition.

Where is the Met Gala held?

The Met Gala is held in New York’s Upper East Side at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a location that became a household name to a new generation in the ‘00s thanks to the iconic New York-based teen TV series, Gossip Girl. Attendees are photographed on the red carpet outside the museum before making their way inside for the gala dinner, where guests are typically treated to a performance by an award-winning music artist. Past Met Gala performers have included Madonna, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Kanye West, and Florence and the Machine.

Who will be hosting the 2020 Met Gala?

Co-chairing the 2020 Met Gala alongside Anna Wintour will be Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière, entertainment heavyweight Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Oscar-winning actresses Meryl Streep and Emma Stone. With Ghesquière co-chairing, we can expect to see a slew of Louis Vuitton on the red carpet. And, given this is reportedly Streep’s first attendance at the gala, it looks set to be an event that will go down in the fashion history books.

The gala also traditionally has a host committee filled with names from fashion, entertainment and sport. So far no details have been revealed as to who’s on the list for 2020, but we’ll update you here as soon as information comes to hand.

What is the 2020 Met Gala theme?

In November 2019, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition and its accompanying gala theme for 2020 was announced as About Time: Fashion and Duration

Key inspirations for the theme include the museum turning 150 in 2020, Sally Porter’s 1992 film, Orlando, based on Virginia Woolf’s book of the same name, and the French philosopher, Henri Bergson.

The exhibition—which will run from May 7 until September 7, 2020—promises to explore the relationship between fashion and time, highlighting garments from the extensive archives of the museum.

Past Met Gala themes have included 2018’s Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination; 2013’s Punk: Chaos to Couture, and 2019’s Camp: Notes on Fashion.

What is the date of the 2020 Met Gala?

The Met Gala is held on the first Monday of May, and in 2020, this will fall on Monday, May 4.

Which designers will we see on the red carpet?

With Louis Vuitton reportedly serving as a sponsor of the event, we can expect to see the red carpet awash with attendees dressed in designs from the storied French fashion house.

Who is invited to the Met Gala?

The Met Gala’s guest list never fails to feature a roll call of fashion and celebrity luminaries. Anna Wintour is, of course, always in attendance and previous invitees have included Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian West, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss, Emma Stone and Lady Gaga.

How much does it cost to attend the Met Gala?

If you’re on the guest list, the event is free. But if you’re not on the all-important guest list, single tickets are around US$30,000 (AU$43,578) and tables are $US275,000 (AU$399,464).

Why is the Met Gala important?

The gala is an important source of funds for the Costume Institute. It also provides a very visible global platform for designers to showcase their wares.

How many people attend the Met Gala each year?

Around 600 guests attend the event each year.

What happens after the red carpet?

After the show-stopping red carpet, attendees are invited to tour the exhibition before taking their seats for dinner, and often, a performance. Many guests then continue partying into the early hours at Met Gala after parties.

How can I watch the 2020 Met Gala?

Although the Met Gala isn’t broadcast live, the red carpet is usually streamed on US Vogue’s Facebook page, and we’ll have all the red carpet looks and news live right here on May 5, 2020 (May 4 in the US).
